to create 3D visualizations, UE4 introduced Datasmith, a tool that facilitates content production by translating complex CAD and BIM data for real-time visualization in UE4. While Datasmith significantly improves the workflow, detail-rich designs still need to be optimized for efficient running in immersive visualisations.
Working with Unreal Studio and Datasmith may require you to convert your 3D designs into FBX file format. This can damage your data, (as an example, hierarchies can be broken or your file size increases), which sets your project behind, and creates barriers to visualization in UE4 (learn how you can save time with Meshmatic). 3D artists find themselves optimizing 3D content manually by analyzing design files, finding performance-limiting factors and taking steps to optimize the file. This can include carefully finding duplicate assets and instancing them one by one, creating LOD’s for high-poly meshes and many other optimization techniques.

Meshmatic’s 3D preview feature creates a window into the entire 3D file and lets you understand your 3D data visually. With Meshmatic you can ensure bottlenecks in visualization are corrected before importing to UE4, saving you time.
After importing a file, Meshmatic thoroughly analyzes the file and creates an asset inventory that shows statistics (such as vertex count, poly count and more) on different parts of your design, revealing bottlenecks and performance-limiting factors. Knowing our users best, we have enabled all of Meshmatic’s optimization tools with 3D preview which allows edits to your model to be seen in real-time. Using the duplicate detection tool, you can easily find the areas with the highest number of duplicate assets. Then, with the deletion tool, these duplicate assets can be instanced, immediately lightening your 3D model. If you don’t want to visualize part of your model, you can use the filter tool to hide those assets from real-time visualization. Once you’re happy with your edits and optimized design, click the “send to UE” to export to UE as a uasset.
